Belarusian Cuisine Cooking Style and Influences:
The major ingredients used in Belarus are the Belarusian juicy potatoes called as bulba. Potato is used to make a major number of delicious dishes, main courses, bliny (pancakes) and even desserts. Apart from potatoes, pork, poultry meat, game meat ( boar, deer) and fishes are mainly used as staple ingredients in Belarusian cuisines.
What was shocking to me was the use of Indian spices in Belarusian cuisines. I read about it and found out that there is very little left of the authentic Belarusian cuisines today post the great patriotic war. It was only in the 20th century when central Asian and Russian culinary styles started getting incorporated into Belarusian dishes.
The famous rye bread is very commonly consumed in Belarus. It is somewhat sour and made with a lot of seeds like caraway seeds and sunflower seeds. It was never made with Yeast rather Leaven was used to knead the bread dough. Buckwheat flour is commonly used to make pancakes and Draniki. Belarusian cuisine today has evolved a lot like every other European cuisine especially the Asian fusion dishes are extremely popular.
Happy cooking!!
