Chakras are responsible for the flow of energy through your body. The 7main Chakras placed along your spine from the base up to the top of your head correspond to particular nerve bundles, which play a significant role in the functioning of the various organs in your body.
An imbalance or block in one or more of your chakras is believed to impact your emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual health.
The chakra of our interest for this article, the throat chakra, is primarily responsible for self-expression, communication, and the ability to speak your truth. The throat chakra is also called the Vishuddha Chakra.
We will be diving deeper into how the throat chakra plays a significant role in your state of existence and how an open “Vishuddha Chakra” ensures happiness and well-being. How to diagnose a blocked throat chakra and how to heal it when it is.
What Are Chakras?
Chakras are the primary energy centers of our body. These energy centers are believed to spin like a wheel or a disk. Each chakra corresponds to a specific bundle of nerves in our body that are responsible for the proper functioning of various organs of our body.
All your chakras are supposed to be balanced in an ideal state of being, but we wouldn’t be here writing this article, nor would you be here reading it if all of us were existing in an ideal state. Instead, due to reasons unknown and beyond our control, one or more of our chakras end up being blocked or imbalanced.
When one of your chakras is blocked, it will surface in terms of emotional, physical, or spiritual symptoms concerning the blocked or unbalanced chakra.
Though many ancient scriptures and sages mention the presence of 114 chakras in total, most spiritual seekers and teachers primarily focus on the seven major ones placed along the length of our spine.
The seven main chakras (listed by both their common name and Sanskrit name) include:
The Seven Chakras And Their Various Names
- Root chakra (Muladhara): Located at the base of your spine, the “muladhara” is responsible for your sense of stability and security in life.
- Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana): The “Svadhisthana” is located below the belly button. Located just below your belly button, the sacral chakra is linked to your creative and sexual energy, as well as your emotions.
- Solar plexus chakra (Manipura): The solar plexus chakra, located in your stomach area, plays a role in your self-esteem and confidence.
- Heart Chakra (Anahata): The “Anahata” influences your ability to love and express compassion. This chakra is located in the center of the chest.
- Throat chakra (Vishuddha): Located at the base of the throat, “Vishuddha” allows you to speak your inner truth and affects your ability to communicate. It is also known as the Blue Chakra. Read furthermore to know about the blue chakra meaning.
- Third eye chakra (Ajna): Located right between your eyes, the “Ajna” is linked to imagination, gut instinct, and intuition.
- Crown chakra (Sahasrara): The Crown Chakra is located at the top of the head. It allows you to feel a spiritual connection to yourself, others, and the universe.
- Vishuddha: The Throat Chakra: Self-expression, creativity, and communication are the characteristics of the throat chakra. When imbalanced, this leads to the hampering of your ability to communicate effectively.
Diane Malaspina, Ph.D. in therapeutic Yoga Medicine, suggests that one or more of the following occur when your throat chakra is blocked:
- Fearfulness In Speaking Your Truth
- Anxiousness In Speech & Communication
- Difficulty In Expressing Thoughts
Outbursts of emotions or extreme refusal to speak are also common, according to Malaspina.
“Emotionally, those with fifth chakra imbalance may be highly critical of themselves and others,” she explained. The physical symptoms of the fifth chakra block can manifest in the following ways:
- Ulcers Of The Mouth
- Diseases Of The Gum
- Challenges Of The Thyroid
- Laryngitis
- Raspy Throat
- Disorders Related To The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)
Five ways to help heal an unbalanced throat chakra
If you’re struggling with a blocked throat chakra, consider trying one or more of the following practices.
-
Frequent Use Of The Colour Blue
The color blue represents the throat chakra.
According to certified yoga teacher and master reiki healer Guadalupe Terrones, blue crystals such as turquoise, celestite, aquamarine, and lapis lazuli may help balance the throat chakra.
“The throat chakra is in charge of sound and resonance. Because each mineral has a different resonating frequency, minerals are one of the more effective ways to work with the throat chakra,” she explains.
Wearing one of these stones on a necklace can be an effective way to heal your throat chakra.
-
Stretch That Neck
Stretching the area around the neck to open it up helps your throat chakra heal and get more balanced.
Simple neck stretches, according to Terrones, can help prevent the building of stress and tension in the throat and neck area.
How To Stretch Like This:
Bring your chin closer to your chest.
Lean-to the left with your head cocked. Maintain a relaxed posture with your shoulders relaxed
and your head tilted so that your left ear is as close to your left shoulder as feasible.
The right side of your neck should feel a bit stretched.
Try holding this stretch anywhere from 30 to 60 seconds.
Repeat the same process all over again for the opposite side.
-
The Lion’s Breath
A conscious breathing technique, known as the “Lion’s Breath,” is beneficial for the throat chakra.
How To Perform The Lion’s Breath:
- Breathe in through your nose
- Keep your mouth and eyes wide open
- Stick your tongue out and exhale with an audible “roar.” The breath that falls out of your mouth and nose should be almost as loud as a lion’s roar.
The Lion’s roar helps you get rid of toxins, stimulates your throat and chest area, and eases stress.
-
Possess The Right Crystals
Blue-hued chakra such as Aquamarine, Lapis Lazuli, and Sodalite should be cleverly used to balance your throat chakra.
How To Effectively Use Blue Crystals For Throat Chakra:
- Place a crystal at the best of your throat while resting
- Carrying them with you always
- Wearing jewelry made out of them
- Placing them as a part of house decor

Yoga To The Rescue
By releasing tension in the area of the body surrounding a chakra, one can restore the flow of energy in that particular region, Malaspina says.
Poses such as the Fish, Plow, and Shoulder Stand provide a substantial release to the neck muscles, thus proving to be beneficial for the healing of the throat chakra.
We wish you all the best in unlocking the ultimate potential of your throat chakra and your existence.
