1: Talk to Your Loved Ones
The worst thing a person suffering from anxiety can do is shut their friends and family out. It might be difficult to make plans and follow through with them, but remember how much better you will feel at the end of it.
If you struggle going out at times, you can always plan indoor activities to do with your friends. Invite them over for a cup of coffee and talk through your troubles.
2: Workout Daily
Exercise produces happy hormones in the body, which can help relieve symptoms of anxiety. You will likely find you start looking forward to your workout routine. Don’t worry if you’re not a fitness fanatic, as there are still plenty of exercises you can do to reap the benefits.
Yoga, for example, is a brilliant workout for both beginners and experts. Even if you have never even performed a yoga pose before, you can always start somewhere. Consider getting a yoga mat for your home and following beginners’ workouts online.
3: Avoid Alcohol and Drugs
Unfortunately, many people with anxiety (or other mental illnesses) turn to alcohol and other drugs to cope. While it may alleviate symptoms at first, it will only make them worse later on. Some people find they end up relying on drugs or alcohol. Try your best to avoid these at any cost, and seek help if you feel you may have an addiction.
Of course, this does not cover the drugs you are prescribed. Make sure you take any medication your doctor or therapist prescribes for you!
4: See a Therapist
Therapy helps plenty of people suffering from mental illnesses, including those with an anxiety disorder. If you find the right therapist, they can help you adjust your thought process, helping you to see things from a more positive perspective.
Don’t assume therapy is a quick route to no anxiety, though – it’s a long process that requires dedication on your part. CBT is particularly helpful for those with anxiety, so look into that.
5: Talk to Your Doctor
If you’re not sure where to start, your doctor is a good option. They can point you in the direction of a good counselor, and they can even prescribe medication if they think you need it.
Remember to be completely honest in your appointment. Let them know how severe it is and whether you suffer from panic attacks. Remember – the first step is always the hardest.
